Areen Alsaid

Dr. Areen Alsaid is an Assistant Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the director of the Safe, Empathetic, and Trustworthy technologies (SET) lab. Her research focuses on affective computing and user state estimation to facilitate human and automation teaming. Before joining UM-Dearborn, she worked as a research scientist and data scientist at Ford Motor Company where she worked on developing in-vehicle technologies to increase trust and acceptance of automated vehicles. Areen earned her PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and MS degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Heather C. Lum (she/her) is an assistant professor and director of the Virtual Environments & Cognitive Training Research (VECToR) laboratory at Arizona State University. She earned her Ph.D. in applied experimental and human factors psychology from the University of Central Florida in 2011. Her primary research interests focus on perceptions of technology, specifically the ways in which technology is impacting the way we interact with each other as humans. Other areas of interest include the use of psychophysiological measures such as eye tracking and vocal analyses to better determine and study the critical applied cognitive and experimental topics of interest such as spatial cognition, human-human and human-robot team interactions. Dr. Lum conducted research on human-non-human teaming in the summer of 2023 as part of the U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. She is also currently a Fulbright Specialist.

Dr. X. Jessie Yang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering and Robotics at the University of Michigan. Dr. Yang obtained her PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (Human Factors) and her BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, both from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Yang's research interests include human-autonomy/robot interaction, human factors in high-risk industries, and user experience design. Her research has been supported by grants from NSF, NIH, and DoD, including an NSF CAREER award, as well as from industrial collaborations, including Boeing and GM. She is active in the HART, CEDM, healthcare, and surface transportation TGs and has served on the HFES mentorship committee. ​

Mengyao Li

Dr. Mengyao Li is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. They earned a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Li directs the Hybrid Intelligence (HI) Lab, which investigates the interaction between human and machine intelligence.
Their research focuses on understanding, predicting, and shaping human–AI communication, social cooperation, and long-term coevolution, particularly in safety-critical environments. By integrating methods from engineering, psychology, and computational modeling, their work aims to advance the design of robust, adaptive, and trustworthy human-AI systems.

Maria Fields is a first year PhD student in the Industrial and Operations Engineering department advised by Yili Liu at the University of Michigan. Her research interests include generative artificial intelligence and generative adversarial networks from a human factors perspective.

Alejandra is a third-year Ph.D. student in Engineering Psychology at Oregon State University, advised by Dr. Christopher Sanchez. She is the President of the Oregon State University HFES Student Chapter. Her research interests span human factors, applied cognition, and human–computer interaction. In addition to her research interest, Alejandra has a passion for design. She helps research groups share their work through websites, newsletters, logos, videos, and social media.
